The text of the Jesus Prayer, its shortened version, is placed on the small spacer bead: «Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner». In full the Jesus Prayer runs: «Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner». This prayer is the basic one in the monastic rule, and all elders say it continually to themselves. In this way Christian ascetics train themselves not to let their thoughts scatter and to remember God constantly, to speak with Him, and they receive His help and protection. This is a great prayer that helps in a difficult hour also laypeople.
