On this icon the Mother of God is depicted with seven swords pierced into Her heart: three on the right, three on the left and one below. The number seven denotes the fullness of grief, sorrow and heartache experienced by the Mother of God in Her earthly life. In prayer practice no distinction is made between the icons «Softener of Evil Hearts» and «Seven Arrows», since they belong to the same iconographic type. Believers pray before this image for protection from evil people and the slander of ill-wishers, for the reconciliation of those at enmity, and also for the softening of their own hearts, deliverance from evil thoughts and from judging others.
