The rich pattern of the bead consists of a continuous wavy stem from which curved leaves with a strongly curled lower part branch off. This ancient motif was used in all periods of Byzantine art. It symbolized the continuity of life, blossoming eternal life in the heavenly garden, the beauty of the Divine creation. Such an ornament also resembled the grapevine, which in the Gospel is a symbol of Christ Himself. «I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser» (John 15:1) – so the Savior of the world called Himself.
