The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, according to tradition, was painted by the Apostle Luke. It was brought to Rus in the early 12th century and has since been venerated as the chief sacred treasure of our Fatherland and protectress of the Russian land. On the reverse are written words of supplication to the Most Holy Theotokos: "Attend and hear, O Lady, and grant consolation to Thy servants."
