The icon's obverse bears the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, while the reverse depicts the miracle of the rescue of three merchants who were robbed by sailors and thrown into the sea. Around it are the words of a prayer - simple yet full of deep symbolic meaning: "O good servant of Christ, who pours out to the whole world the precious ointment of mercy and the inexhaustible sea of wonders." The precious ointment of mercy is an image of the merciful help that St. Nicholas gives to all who turn to him in prayer. These words also reflect the real wonder that has been occurring for centuries at his resting place in the city of Bari, Italy: the relics of St. Nicholas exude myrrh - a fragrant oil that miraculously heals the sick. The inexhaustible sea of wonders is an image of the countless real miracles worked through prayer to St. Nicholas. The "Wonder of the Three Merchants" tells of merchants perishing at sea who called upon St. Nicholas for help and were miraculously saved.
