St. George is one of the most venerated saints in the Christian Church. He is known as a patron of warriors and a helper in agricultural labor. Men, women, and children alike turn to the icon of this saint, for George the Victorious helps everyone who believes that what they ask for will surely be fulfilled. This pendant depicts the saint's most famous miracle: the rescue of a princess from a dragon to which she had been offered as a sacrifice. This miracle has a symbolic meaning: the princess represents the human soul, and the dragon the devil who seeks to devour it. St. George, the heavenly protector, descends from Heaven to help the soul escape destruction. On the reverse is written a prayer: "Martyr George, pray that all who sing to you may be delivered from misfortunes."
