According to tradition, the Tikhvin icon appeared in the Russian lands in 1383 in radiant light above Lake Ladoga and flew "borne by angels," coming to rest by the Tikhvinka River. At the place where the icon stopped, a church was built in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God, around which Ivan the Terrible erected a monastery in the 16th century. People pray to the Tikhvin icon for healing from various illnesses, especially paralysis; the icon protects and guards against all troubles and misfortunes. The icon's feast is celebrated on July 9 (June 26 Old Style).
