The openwork filigree tsata is a traditional ancient Russian ornament. Among the Slavic peoples, the tsata was a symbol of power: this ornament, in the form of an open circle, was worn on the chest by princes and their high-ranking associates. The Kazan icon is a shield and protection for every person. It is especially venerated as a helper in family troubles and a healer in illnesses. On the reverse of the pendant is the text of a prayer: "Most Pure Theotokos, pray for me, Thy servant."
