The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The reverse bears the Kazan Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God, one of the most venerated of all.
Prayers before the Kazan image may help in many of life's affairs; she is also entreated in despondency, in sorrow and in calamity, when strength to struggle against misfortune runs out. Through prayers before the Kazan image one may be healed of any illness, and especially of ailments of the eyes and even of blindness — not only bodily but also spiritual. The image of the Mother of God and prayers to Her help in finding the right answer to difficult questions. For many centuries people placed the Kazan icon beside a child's cradle, knowing that the Mother of God would watch over the child and protect it at need. From ancient times, too, newlyweds were blessed with the Kazan icon for a long and happy life together.
"O Lord, by the prayers of the Mother of God, save me" is inscribed on the cross beside the image.
