The image of the Crucified Christ on the front of this cross is filled with fatherly love.
The image of the Mother of God known as the "Incarnation" and five holy hierarchs are depicted on the reverse. The images of the Mother of God and of the hierarchs are spiritually inseparable. The rank of hierarch is a particular one: these are bishops who served Jesus Christ with the same sacrificial devotion as the Mother of God, and who in their pastoral work and labours of enlightenment came to resemble Him.
At the very top is His Holiness Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus. On the left is Metropolitan Peter.
On the right, attending the Mother of God, is St Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow, the closest spiritual companion of St Sergius of Radonezh and the tutor and confessor of the holy righteous prince Dmitry Donskoy. He became renowned for his wisdom and for his miracles.
At the foot of the cross are the icons of St Dimitry of Rostov and Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow, saints especially celebrated for their literary legacy.
