The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Above the Crucifixion is the inscription "King of Glory". At the Lord's feet is the word "NIKA", signifying Christ's victory over death.
The reverse bears a short prayer addressed to the Lord — "Save and Protect" — together with the vine, one of the most widespread symbolic images of Christianity. It is a symbol of Jesus Christ, who says of Himself in the Gospel: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman" (John 15:1). For this reason wine for Holy Communion is made from grapes, symbolising the Blood of Christ.
