The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The form of the cross is traditional to ancient Novgorod. The cross enclosed within a circle is a symbol of eternity and of Divine Glory. Around the circle is inscribed the prayer: "Sing to the Lord and exalt Him unto all ages." On the reverse is the Guardian Angel with a cross and a sword, with which he defends a person from spiritual and physical assaults of evil. The Angel cannot violate a person's freedom of will, and so his help must be sought in prayer. "O Angel of God, be my defender" is inscribed beneath the image.
