The front of the cross presents the Crucifixion attended by the Mother of God and John the Forerunner. Above is Christ Pantocrator, the Almighty, holding an open book. This image presents the Lord as Heavenly King and Judge. Along the edge of the cross is inscribed the protective prayer "Let God Arise".
The reverse of the cross bears the Valaam Icon of the Mother of God. The icon is venerated as miracle-working, and before it people pray for healing from illness.
The image is surrounded on four sides by archangels. Above is the archangel Uriel, who with flame in his hands kindles in human hearts the love of God. To the left is the archangel Michael, commander of the Lord's host. To the right stands the archangel Gabriel, the messenger of God. Below is the archangel Raphael, held to be the mightiest of healers. Along the edge of the cross is inscribed the prayer: "Christ, the Sun of righteousness, sent you forth as rays to enlighten the Russian land, O saints of God who shone forth from our kindred. Therefore pray to Him, O holy ones, to disperse the cloud of unbelief that now surrounds us, and to grant us peace and great mercy."
