The front of this equal-armed cross bears the Holy Face of the Saviour, the Image Not Made by Hands; the reverse bears the icon "The Miracle of St George and the Dragon".
The Great Martyr George suffered for the faith during the great persecutions of Christians under the emperor Diocletian. In his lifetime the saint became renowned not only as a brave warrior and steadfast confessor of the faith, but also as a compassionate and merciful healer and wonderworker. He is prayed to for the protection of soldiers and of the army, for the defence of the state, and for preservation and deliverance.
