The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. On either side He is attended in the Deesis (intercession for mankind) by the Holy Mother of God and John. Above is the Holy Face of Christ. On the suspension loop is Golgotha — a symbolic representation of the Crucifixion, consisting of the Cross upon a mount together with the canonical inscriptions.
At the centre of the reverse is St Nicholas the Wonderworker. The saint is regarded as the patron of seafarers, merchants and children. People also turn to him with difficulties in trade and in study, and in the search for a worthy spouse. Above is the Guardian Angel; on the left St Alexander Nevsky; on the right St George the Victorious; below, St Luke of Crimea.
