The front of the cross presents the Holy Face of the Saviour, the Image Not Made by Hands. This is one of the most human images of the Saviour, and at the same time a deeply symbolic one. It simply shows the face of Christ, without depicting any act, as other icons do. This allows one to enter into personal communion with Christ.
The reverse of the cross presents the Kazan image of the Mother of God. This miracle-working icon is greatly venerated in Russia. The image, miraculously discovered, helped the people in difficult times. Help in hardship is still sought before this icon, and it is customary to give a blessing for marriage with it.
Around the image of the Mother of God is inscribed the prayer: "Preserve Thy servants from all misfortune, O blessed Mother of God."
