Above the image hovers a six-winged Seraph — a fiery angel who stands closest of all to the Divine Throne. According to Church tradition, the Seraphim are angels of a special order, endowed with the power to burn away all evil and impurity with fire.
The reverse bears the troparion to the Life-Giving Cross: "Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify."
