The cross depicts the Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He is attended by St Mary Magdalene, the Most Holy Mother of God, the apostle John and St Joseph, witnesses of the Lord's sufferings on the Cross. Above is the icon of the Holy Trinity, in which is captured the appearance of the Triune God to the forefather Abraham in the form of three angels. In the lower medallion is the Miracle of St George and the Dragon. The Great Martyr George is venerated as the patron of warriors, a defender against the powers of evil and a helper in spiritual struggle.
At the centre of the reverse is the most venerated saint of the Orthodox Church, St Nicholas the Wonderworker. People pray to him when setting out on a journey, especially by sea, and ask for healing in various ailments, for help in matters of trade, in study and in the search for a worthy spouse. On either side of St Nicholas are the images of the archangels Michael and Gabriel. Above is the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, the foremost treasure of the Russian land. In the lower medallion are icons of two holy helpers in every ailment, the blessed Xenia of St Petersburg and Matrona of Moscow.
