The Crucifixion. The Guardian Angel. Orthodox Cross

The ancient form of this baptismal cross recalls an anchor. The basis for depicting the cross in the likeness of an anchor lies in the words of the apostle Paul, that Christians may "lay hold upon the hope set before us, which we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast". Above the Cross is depicted the Prepared Throne.

A person is helped by his Guardian Angel, shown on the reverse of the cross. He is given by God at Baptism and cares for the person throughout life: guarding from the devil's snares and seeking to shield from sudden death, so that one may not die without repentance, to the joy of the demons. The Angel defends the soul from the ceaseless assaults of the spirits of malice, and after death becomes its guide in the world beyond. The image of the Guardian Angel is placed on a baptismal cross so that a person may always remember him, love him and pray to him. For without the person's own participation, without his desire and his prayer, the Angel cannot save him. Many saints who were granted to see the spiritual world beheld the Guardian Angel weeping beside sinners.

Above the Angel is placed the icon of the Holy Face of Christ.
