The front depicts the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. On either side He is attended by the Most Holy Mother of God and the holy prophet and Forerunner of the Lord John the Baptist, who have particular boldness before God to pray for all people.
Icons in which they are shown praying to Christ are called a Deesis, which means "supplication".
Above the Crucifixion is placed the Holy Face of Christ, the Image Not Made by Hands. This is the first icon of the Saviour, imprinted by Him upon a cloth.
The reverse bears the troparion to the Life-Giving Cross: "Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify."
