The Crucifixion of Christ. The Archangel Michael. The Holy Trinity. The Holy Righteous Prince Alexander Nevsky. Orthodox Cross

The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. On either side He is attended in the Deesis (intercession for mankind) by the Most Holy Mother of God and the prophet John the Forerunner, Baptist of the Lord. Above is the Most Holy Trinity — the image of the Triune God who appeared in the form of three Angels to the forefather Abraham. On the suspension loop is the Holy Face of the Saviour, the Image Not Made by Hands, one of the most powerful protective symbols of Orthodoxy. In the lower medallion is the image of the Archangel Michael. The Commander of the Heavenly Host wages relentless war against the powers of evil, guards the gates of paradise and defends the souls of mankind.

On the reverse of the cross is a short prayer addressed to the Lord — "Save and Protect" — together with the prayer to the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord: "Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify." In the lower medallion is depicted the holy righteous prince Alexander Nevsky, venerated as a defender of Orthodox Christians and patron of warriors. At the crown of the cross we see an anchor, the most ancient Christian symbol of hope and salvation. The form of the cross itself is likewise shaped as an anchor.
