The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. On either side He is attended by the Most Holy Mother of God and the holy prophet and Forerunner of the Lord John the Baptist. Above is placed the icon of the Holy Trinity — the image of the Triune God who appeared in the form of three angels to the forefather Abraham. On the suspension loop is the Image Not Made by Hands of the Lord Jesus Christ, venerated as one of the most powerful protective symbols of Orthodoxy. Below is the Great Martyr George the Victorious, one of the most venerated saints of the Christian church, patron of warriors, helper in the labour of the fields and spiritual helper in the unseen warfare against the powers of evil.

At the foot of the reverse is the holy righteous prince Alexander Nevsky, venerated as a defender of Orthodox Christians and patron of warriors. At the centre of the reverse is inscribed the short prayer traditionally placed on all crosses: "Save and Protect". Around it is the opening verse of the protective prayer to the Precious Cross of the Lord. This prayer is recited in times of danger and carried on one's person for protection against evil powers: "Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from before His face. As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire, so let the demons perish before the face of those who love God."
