The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. On either side He is attended in the Deesis (intercession for mankind) by the Most Holy Mother of God and John the Forerunner, Baptist of the Lord. Around the Crucifixion is a short prayer to the Cross: "Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify." Below are the three holy authors of the Divine Liturgy — St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom. Above is the icon of the Holy Trinity, the image of the Triune God who appeared in the form of three Angels to the forefather Abraham.

The reverse bears the opening verses of the protective prayer to the Precious Cross of the Lord. This prayer is recited in times of danger and carried on one's person for protection against evil powers: "Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from before His face. As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire, so let the demons perish before the face of those who love God."
