The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ; the reverse bears the Valaam Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God. The icon was painted in 1878 by Father Alypius, a hieromonk of the Valaam Monastery, and became renowned through the miraculous healing of Natalia Andreyeva, a townswoman, in 1897; since then it has been venerated as a healer in various ailments. It is one of the chief treasures of the Valaam Monastery and a great miracle-working icon of Russia, now kept at the New Valamo Monastery in Finland.
