The front depicts the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. On either side He is attended in the Deesis by the Most Holy Mother of God and the holy prophet and Forerunner of the Lord John the Baptist, who have particular boldness before God to pray for all people. Above is the Holy Trinity, the image of the Triune God's appearance to the forefather Abraham. On the suspension loop of the cross is the Image Not Made by Hands of the Lord Jesus Christ, venerated as one of the most powerful protective symbols of Orthodoxy.

At the centre of the reverse is the icon of the Archangel Michael. The mighty Archangel leads the Heavenly Host in its stand against the powers of darkness. The heavenly army comprises the Guardian Angels of mankind and the saints, who help people to defend themselves against their enemies and to wage spiritual warfare. Around the icon of the Archangel is inscribed the troparion to the Life-Giving Cross: "Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify."
